THE FATAL FAREWELL
Feb. 18, 2010

While the blood, the booze and especially the PAINKILLERS have served us well, it is now time to move on to our new artistic destinations. The relationship we have shared with this machine known as Something Fatal has been similar to that of the relationship shared with the Drunk Mother. It has loved and hated us, it has raised us and made us the men we are (for better or worse), and it has beat the shit out of us every single Friday and Saturday night. The era of Something Fatal was a special period in time, a time which I know we will all look back upon fondly and never stop romanticizing. Every member, both new and old, has been subjected to a desire filled but dysfunctional beast, something so beautiful and so painful. But are we more worse for the wear? Not a goddamn chance! We bear the resilient calluses on skin and bone, heart and soul, and each one of us have grown into better musicians, poets, artists and people (the definition of better is subject to the opinion of the reader). None the less, we would like to thank everyone who really listened and really cared, understood the message and saw what we as artists were trying to accomplish, you were just as much a part of this as any aching fret hand, drumming blister, or vocal chord affliction. So what comes next? Perhaps you'll find some of us sitting in a dim lit bar corner, picking at the frays of a poorly upholstered booth seat, ignoring everyone but the waitress. In actualilty, where there is death, there is birth. So keep an eye out for two new acts, the Lexington Cure and a currently untitled Justin Hammond project. Again, thank you for sharing in this strange love with us

Sincerely

Alexander Fruch of The Fatals

2010
Jan. 21, 2010

Holy cow! Sorry for the lack of updates, but I'm sure that can kind of tell you how busy we have been over at Camp Blacktop. The Jonah/Kevin 7inch is out and has been getting get reviews and airplay. You can read the Alternative Press review at here. If you have not had you chance to pick up the album, we still have a good handful left. They are hand numbered out of 1000 and sure to go quick. Head over to the Blacktop Records store and order one now!

Excited news with The Campbell Apartment. The boys are in the process of recording a new album this March/April and Jonah Matranga will be mixing the album. It should be great times. Look forward to a late 2010/Early 2011 release for this bad boy!

We have a few other cool things up our sleeves as well for 2010. Including the Frankie Mayfield and The Soundbox full length slated for this May and a 12inch 180gram vinyl for a cool band from Long Island, New York. Stay tuned for an official announcement. It will be an album worth checking out. I can't express how excited I am for it. Once everything is confirmed you folk will be the first to know.

As well we are super pleased to announce that Blacktop Records will be working with and releasing music by Pete Trembley and the Boozy Truth. PT & the BT are Welland's best kept secret and we are happy to be bringing him to the masses. Get ready to party! Pete is currently recording his first release on Blacktop titled 'Mid Tempo Madness.' Expect a CD/Vinyl release this summer. As well Pete will be playing this Friday at 2pm on thatchannel.com previewing some new tunes. The future is bright here at Blacktop!

As always, along with good news there is always bad. We have parted ways with Amnesia Amnesia, Elias The Band, Hardcore Warrior and Something Fatal. Amnesia Amnesia just released a new EP titled The Eating Disease. Please head over to myspace.com/amnesiaamnesia to check it out. So worth while. Elias The Band are taking time off to regroup. We will be seeing some big changes with that band in the near future. Myspace.com/eliastheband is a good place to keep in touch and see what the boys are up to. Hardcore Warrior is also regrouping and taking time to put together a full band. Something Fatal broke up and disbanded. Blacktop Records still loves these artists and you never know what the future may hold. You may see these familiar faces with us again in the future. In the meantime keep in touch at www.blacktoprecords.ca. We have some cool plans with old friends and cool plans with new friends. You never know what kind of rock n roll you may get into over here. Much love and I promise I'll keep this site update more often. Life gets busy, eh?

-love Ben

news update!
Nov. 18, 2009

Ladies and Gents! Lots going on at Camp Blacktop. The test presses will be in for the Jonah/Kevin split. Really looking forward to how they are going to sound. Anthony Forrest is starting his full length in Spain. Ari and The Campbell Apartment kicked ass on MTVu and are playing some shows in some far off country. Something Fatal isn't a band anymore.

But for every good band that breaks up there is another band equally as good (or better!) that gets together. Blacktop welcomes Cat On Acid to the family! It features Ross from Hunters & Anglers on drums, Mike from Street Legal on guitars/vox and my good pal (and loyal website dude!) Henry Wiens on bass. If you like bad ass shit then you should check out Cat On Acid. We are releasing "King Rat" this Sunday through a limited pressing on cassette tape. It will be available at shows and online. You can catch the boys this Saturday in Langton and at their release show this Sunday in St. Catharines at the Merchant Ale House. Its going to be sweet times.

As well we have some new tunes from Amnesia Amnesia available. The boys have just released "The Eating Disease." Its a new digital EP that you can find floating around on the internet as well on a limited pressing on CD-R. Catch the boys on the road this winter and early 2010 in support of this headbanging EP. As of now please stay tunes for lots of lovely fun. Thanks. over and out.

Details on the first vinyl release on Blacktop Records!
Nov. 10, 2009

So here it is folks. The details on the first vinyl release on Blacktop Records.

Jonah Matranga and Kevin Seconds will be releasing a split 7 inch vinyl through Canada’s Blacktop Records on Tuesday, December 22, 2009. The vinyl will feature four brand new previously unreleased songs including “I’ve Always Wanted To Write a Song Commanding People To (dance!)” and “Daylight” by Matranga and “Grip On Yr Own” and “Life Unknown” by Seconds. Aside from the recordings Kevin Seconds also designed the artwork with additional layout by Welland, Ontario based graphic designer Jillian Grenier.

The limited pressing of 1000 hand-numbered copies will be available to purchase in Canada at all records shops through F>A>B> Distribution. It will also be available online at various online outlets including the official Blacktop Records webstore at blacktoprecords.ca and interpunk.com.

After 15 releases on Blacktop Records this is the first to be pressed on vinyl. This split also marks Kevin Seconds first project with the label and Jonah Matranga’s second. In September 2007 the Canadian based record label released Jonah Matranga’s full length debut titled And. Ben Andress, owner of Blacktop Records, approached Kevin Seconds in late 2008 about the idea of doing a split with Jonah Matranga.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be difficult getting them involved in this project knowing how well they have worked together in the past.” Matranga released a cassette tape under the name Onelinedrawing on Kevin Seconds’ Pop Rockit Records. Kevin Seconds, known for his role as the front man of the highly influential hardcore punk band 7seconds, has released various splits in the past and has plans to release more with such artists as Mike Hall, Mike Scott and Kepi from the Groovie Ghoulies. When he’s not making music he’s hosting a weekly hour-long show called “Absolute Rant&Ruckus” on the Canadian based punkradiocast.com.

Jonah Matranga, known for his role as the front man of the band Far, is also no stranger to releasing split vinyl. In 2006 Matranga released a split with the UK’s Frank Turner. As well, under the name Onelinedrawing, Jonah has also recorded splits with Rival Schools and Sense Field. Aside from his solo material Matranga has recently reformed the band Far and just finished an album for Vagrant Records. Both Kevin Seconds and Jonah Matranga plan on playing shows together to support this release.

You can pre order the album at the Blacktop Records web shop or on www.interpunk.com.

THE CAMPBELL APARTMENT ON MTVU
Oct. 29, 2009

"OK folks, here's the deal. My band made a music video for the song "St Louis" in Brooklyn, and now mtvU wants to show it. But to get on the air, we have to get more votes on the www.mtvu.com web site (on this thing called Debate Club that pits two bands videos against each other and fans vote) than this band Settle for their video "Murder".

We need at least 10,000 votes (people can vote limitless times) and hopefully more in order to win. If we get the most votes - and voting begins on Thursday and goes til the following Wednesday (10/29-11/4) - the video for our little song goes into rotation on mtvU. By the way mtvU is their university channel that feeds into pretty much all dorms and student unions, etc - some places that have lots of schools (Boston, SF) have it as part of everybody's cable package. MTV channels haven't shown music videos for years as we all know - mtvU plays them 50% of the time. It would obviously help our career, might even finance the next album (knowing someone is paying for it and putting it out would certainly help me write it!)

Thank you so very much for your vote, and I will send you the link to go vote on Thursday, and then you will never hear from me again.

Ari"

Okay friends! so here is the link.

Please vote for The Campbell Apartment as often as possible. It means the world to us.
Thanks for the support!

Bad ass BBQs
Sep. 15, 2009

Wow! I can't believe that it is already September. Back to school means good parties and great music. This weekends included some bad ass BBQs with Anthony Forrest. After some sweet Burgs Anthony jammed out some new tunes from his full length, 'Now', which comes out on Blacktop Records summer of 2010. Luckily my web cam was recording to catch this new tune, 'For The Love Of A Woman.'

Aug. 19, 2009

Something Fatal has made their way to the number one spot after spending 2 weeks at number two. Check out the top 30 with lots of great albums listed every week, earshot- online.com/charts/cioi.cfm . Also The Fatals have received another pleasant review from the kind folks at Sound Faction. You can read the review here. If you have not picked up Something Fatal's Goodnight Nurse you can do so at your local record shop or pick it up online.

Another success was Welland's Bridgestock. Thanks to Pat, Ryan and the city of Welland for making a great day. As well a big thank you to all you who came by to the Blacktop table or the H&A set to say 'hello.' We love you and 'hello back.' Props to the PTW gang for being sweet dudes and bringing the rock.

All in all a good week and we'll hold hands soon.

May The Force Be With You!
Aug. 9, 2009

Blacktop Records is super stoked to say that we will be working with Montreal's Anthony Forrest. Some may know Anthony from his two roles in Star Wars: A New Hope (the Sandtrooper in the famous Jedi Mind Trick scene and The Fixer from a scene never included in the final cut) as well as his role in the cult classic horror flick Killer's Moon. Following on from San Diego Comic Con where we were informed the big news that Hasbro Toys are going to bring out a 'Star Wars' The Fixer action figure in 2010. Around this same time Anthony's new album 'NOW' (North Of Watford) will be out on Blacktop Records. "The new album is very much song-centric. Unplugged and off the floor."
You can learn and hear more about Anthony at anthonyforrest.com

NOW will be out on Blacktop Records summer of 2010.
The Kevin Seconds/Jonah Matranga 7inch will be out this winter!
stick around for details

Another huge thank you has to go out to Sandy and Jay at thatchannel.com. All of July they have had Blacktop Records guests in their studio. It was a wonderful and interesting month. If you missed any of the episodes you can catch them over at thatchannel.com.

Finally after all this waiting Foxfight has finally posted some songs online. Head over to myspace.com/foxfight to get your face mashed in. Make sure you check out the show listings to find out when the boys will be in a town near you.

Just like to mention that just recently the boys from Hunters & Anglers were a part of the "On The Way To The Gallery: the songs of the Boozy Truth" tribute album. The boys do a rad cover of Pete's song 'The Story So Far.' If you have a chance to pick this up you should. It's a fun CD which also includes other covers by Street Legal, Dan and Spencer from Attack In Black, Matt Sajn, Sarah D. and more. You can pick this album up from Pete at any of his shows and Hunters & Anglers may have a few copies with them at Bridgestock in Welland. Oh ya...I forget to mention. Hunters & Anglers is playing with Poison The Well on August 15th. Check bridge-stock.com for more details and stage/set times.

Stay tuned! We have two pieces of huge news to let you folks in on. Check back in a week or so for this amazing news. I love you all and stay sassy.!

News update!
March 26, 2009

It's not every day you see a group of people grow from great artists to brillant. Hunters and Anglers seems to be a part of that percentage that seems to rise above the rest. Last year Consumer Alert was ripping the scene a new asshole and now, regrouped and better than ever, Hunters and Anglers manage to pull it off ten fold. This band is unreal. Blacktop Records is happy to announce that we will be releasing Hunters and Anglers follow up to thier self titled EP. Glad to have the band a part of the family. In the meantime stop by myspace.com/huntersanglers to check out tunes or catch them March 31 at The Manison House.

Welcome to the new blacktoprecords.org!
October 25, 2008

Wow! where do I start! It's been a long week of doing this and that but I'm finally ready to sit down and write a little blurb for the new website that Henry is making us. First thing first...Baba Booey.

Now that that is out of the way let's do a breakdown!

Amnesia Amnesia: I would like to welcome these boys to the family. Thier sound gets me hot and makes me want to thrash around like a madman. I'm excited to announce that I will be putting out thier debuet EP, Vs. The Bear, this winter. It will be available wherever good music is found as well as it will be on all your favourite online sources, like iTunes and Napster, early 2009. Stop by www.myspace.com/amnesiaamenesia to check out the tunes and say Hi!

Ashley Sloggett: Ashley has been locked away in a studio all this year after a cross Canada tour with Kirby. Look forward to a 2009 release. In the meantime you can view some videos at www.myspace.com/ashleysloggett.

Campbell Apartment: Ari will be back in Canada this November to do a one off show in Toronto performing an all acoustic at The Boat. If you still have not picked up their album yet then you're really missing out. If you have already picked it up then call your favourite radio station and request "River Of Sound" or "St. Louis" so you can actually hear good music on your way to work, the dentist, hell, etc. The boys are always up to something cool so stop by www.myspace.com/thecampbellapartment and make sure you breathe in the cool air.

Elias The Band: After two years in the making Our Sophomore Effort is finally out and ready for your ears to devour. Call your favourite radio station and request "Anything For A Buck" and stop by your favourite record shop and pick up the album. It's rock n roll to the ninth degree! If you're too cool for the pysical world the album with be available November 22nd online through all your favorite online sorces. For a limited time download the first five songs from the album for free at www.myspace.com/eliastheband

Foxfight: You may wonder what happened to Foxfight. They are still around and will be back in full force early 2009. The boys have been jamming with a new drummer and bassist. Except some tunes and shows soon! For current updates visit www.myspace.com/foxfight

Hardcore Warrior: Hardcore Warrior is still as hardcore as ever. He was recently voted by Niagara Region Pulse Reader's Poll as "Best Local Lore" along side the "Blue Ghost Tunnel" which was featured in the Stephen King based movie "The Dead Zone." The Dead Zone would have been better if Hardcore Warrior was in it, instead of the Blue Ghost Tunnel. But if you haven't heard Thunder Under Pressure is in stores everywhere!. If you still have not picked up a copy do so now before you die! For you digital freaks don't fret because Thunder Under Pressure will be on iTunes and such on November 22nd!!! As well stop by www.myspace.com/hardcorewarrior to say Hi to the Warrior himself!

Jonah Matranga: Jonah will be working Germany and the USA. Stick around for details about his return to Canada. In the meantime check out www.myspace.com/hotlittlepony for a nice little treat! www.jonahmatranga.com as always if you want to keep it real.

Something Fatal: Exclusive brand new Something Fatal track at both www.myspace.com/blacktoprecordings and www.myspace.com/somethingfatal! The album is done and being mixed. "Hello Nurse" will be out early 2009. Be prepared for a WOW album.

be safe...and BABA BOOEY!!

-Ben
